2009 Art Essay Contest

Deadline for 2009 Art Essay Contest is March 30

Submitting Students Entries to the 2009 Art Essay Contest

The ISU University Museums Art Essay Contest is offered annually. Four $125 awards are given to the best essays written on ISU art in English 150 or 250 during either the fall or spring semester. This contest encourages students to write for audiences beyond the ISUComm Foundation Courses classroom.

Procedures and Deadlines. Instructors will select a few well-composed essays to submit to the ISUComm Foundation subcommittee. The subcommittee will then choose 16–20 essays to submit to the University Museums Committee who will select four winners, each receiving $125. At a reception on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at 2 p.m., at the Brunnier Art Museum, student participants will receive certificates, and the four monetary award recipients will be announced. Portions of the 16–20 essays will be read and the entirety of the four winning essays will be read. A PowerPoint presentation will show all of the art pieces as the art essays are read. To allow time for this process, instructors need to submit nominations no later than noon on Monday, March 30, to Deanna Stumbo in 403 Ross.

Kinds of Assignments. Students may write about any work of art within the University
Museums collections, including the Art on Campus Collection, the Farm House Museum, or the Brunnier Art Museum. Essays can be narrative, descriptive, or persuasive. Tours are available for classes by calling the University Museums office at 294-4442 or by e-mailing Amanda Hall at ajhall@iastate.edu.

Evaluation for Awards. The University Museums Committee uses the following criteria:

  • clear accurate description of the work of art
  • insightful and creative interpretation(s) of the work of art
  • personal evaluation of the work of art based on description and interpretation
