Program Endorsements
In the fall of 2003, the following Endorsement of ISUComm was drafted by the members of the Rhetoric and Professional Communication faculty, one of the largest rhetoric faculties in the nation. The statement was susbequently adopted by the Department of English Administrative Committee and the First-Year Composition (FYC) Committee.
Resolution of Endorsement for the ISUComm Initiative
The members of the First-Year Composition Committee in the Department of English endorse the ISUComm initiative as an appropriate strategy for strengthening undergraduate communication education at Iowa State University. In particular, we support ongoing efforts to integrate written, oral, visual, and electronic communication, to distribute communication activities across the entire undergraduate experience, and to promote engagement by faculty across the curriculum in the critical work of communication instruction.
In the process of generating the proposed curriculum, ISUComm has reviewed the relevant research, consulted with nationally-recognized communication scholars, conducted comprehensive discussions with all sectors of the Iowa State community, reviewed and refined this input in detailed conversations among our own communication scholars, and, finally, tested its proposed plan in pilot courses and through careful assessment. The resulting curriculum is balanced and flexible, capable of adapting to changing student needs, resources, and technologies. As such, ISUComm fulfills Iowa State’s land grant mission, with its emphasis on civic responsibility, technological expertise, and superior professional preparation for all students.
