Guess My Audience

Objectives

To create an opportunity for students to experiment with strategies for audience adaptation. To give students a chance to feel the discomfort associated with being listeners to a speech that was prepared with an audience different from the actual audience in mind.

Approximate Time

Fifteen minutes of assignment explanation and planning at least one week prior to the speeches and then one seventy-five minute class session or one and a half or two fifty minute sessions to listen to and to process the speeches

Students can be exempted from English 150 and receive 3 hours of "T" credit for 150 if they meet the following criteria AND receive a "C" or better in English 250 taken at Iowa State University:

NOTE: The First-Year Composition Program became the ISUComm Foundation Courses Program beginning in Fall 2007. As part of this process, English 104 and 105 have been renumbered (English 150 and 250); refocused from an emphasis on writing-only to an integration of written, oral, visual, and electronic communication (WOVE); and restructured (shifting the second course to the sophomore level).

English 250 Test-Out Overview

Test Date

The next 250 Test-Out Exam will be offered Saturday, August 30, 2008. Students registered for the exam should arrive at 8:40 a.m. in 124 Ross Hall for check-in.

English 250 Test-Out

The test-out examination for English 250 involves a multi-stage set of activities related to written, oral, visual, and electronic (WOVE) communication and takes about 6 hours.

Special ISUComm Foundation Courses

Cross-Cultural Sections

Each fall and spring semester some sections of English 150 and 250 are taught as cross-cultural classes. This means half of each section will be international students and half U.S. students. These sections give special emphasis to cross-cultural and international issues. These classes are a great opportunity for U.S. and international students alike to meet others from around the globe and explore cultural issues.

English 150/250 Course Descriptions (2007–2009)

English 150. Critical Thinking and Communication. (3-0) Cr. 3. F.S.SS. Prereq: Concurrent enrollment in Lib 160. Application of critical reading and thinking abilities to topics of civic and cultural importance. Introduction of basic oral, visual, and electronic communication principles to support writing development. Initiation of communication portfolio.

Foundations Courses (formerly First-Year Composition)

Note: The First-Year Composition Program became the ISUComm Foundation Courses Program beginning in Fall 2007. As part of this process, English 104 and 105 have been renumbered (English 150 and 250); refocused from an emphasis on writing-only to an integration of written, oral, visual, and electronic communication (WOVE); and restructured (shifting the second course to the sophomore level).

ISUComm: 2005–2007

ISUComm began systematic piloting of its new curriculum in the foundation courses, English 104, 105, and 105H, during this catalog period. It also began developing a comprehensive program assessment plan based on an assessment-as-learning philosophy with final implementation target for Fall 2007.
