Tuesday, Nov. 13, 3:40–5:00 p.m., 212 Ross Hall. A V-Fair: Sharing Visual Communication Ideas. workshop materials (PDF)Cronon Reading (PDF)Dobrin and Weisser Reading (PDF)
ISUComm teachers will share their approaches to teaching visual communication, particularly from a thematic perspective focusing on the environment. In this workshop ISUComm presents a different approach to thinking and talking about WOVE pedagogy: WOVE and Place/Environment-Themed Communication classes. Using ideas from ecocomposition and the work of William Cronon (author of Uncommon Ground and presenter of an ISU Lecture last fall), three graduate students will share their creative and successful activities, with a focus on the visual mode.

SPECIAL FEATURE: Four faculty from English Department areas will respond to the presentations for their potential synergy with Creative Writing, Literature, Applied Linguistics, and RPC.

Londie Martin will share concepts central to ecocomposition and begin the exploration of the overlap between ecocomposition and visual communication; she will also present culture jamming and its usefulness in group work and critical visual analysis.

Joe Bartolotta will present a visual essay assignment --the Online Documentary Photo Midrash

Callae Frazier will share a capstone assignment--Composing a Thematic Magazine/Journal Cover in the Service of Place and Advocacy--highlighting the connections between ISUComm's goals and a (eco)thematic approach to visual communication.

Matt Search will share an activity, based on William Cronon's work, encouraging students to interrogate visual representations of nature in popular culture, particularly advertisement.

Our faculty responders are Deb Marquart, Linda Shenk, Roberta Vann, and Michael Mendelson.

Please RSVP Deanna (stumbo@iastate.edu) so we can plan light refreshments. But also don't hesitate to come even if you forget to RSVP!

All ISUComm workshops are open to instructors in all disciplines. Faculty from Iowa community colleges and Iowa four-year colleges are welcome to attend.

If you have ideas for future workshops or would like to be a presenter, contact Deanna Stumbo at stumbo@iastate.edu.

Although workshop registration is not required, it is helpful to us in planning if you email your intention to attend to Deanna Stumbo at stumbo@iastate.edu.
